![]() It’s super-slick and been refined nicely over the years to offer new features. The final part of the system is the control app, which is available for iOS, Android and Amazon’s Fire OS. These are definitely more toylike than most traditional slot-cars – although on the plus side they’ll happily take on-track collision after collision without a scratch. They also enable you to try the Takeover mode – but more on that later.Ī new starter kit, Anki Overdrive: Fast & Furious Edition (£169.99/$169.99), adds two movie-themed vehicles in the form of Dom’s Ice Charger and Hobbs’ MXT International, as well as an extra track piece called the Power Zone.ĭon’t expect super-realism from any of the models, though. Supertrucks add a new dimension because they can’t take every corner at full speed or they topple over, so you need to manage them more carefully. Then there are a handful of lorries, called Supertrucks (£59.99/$59.99): X52, X52 ICE, and Freewheel. There are now quite a few extra vehicles you can buy, mostly made up from the Supercar range (£49.99/$49.99 each): Nuke, Nuke Phantom, Thermo, Guardian, and Big Bang. Originally the cars had to scan the course before every single race, but thankfully Anki has updated the software so they only have to do it again if you change track layout. These vehicles have infrared sensors underneath them, so they can scan the track layout and know where they are at any given time. The two starter kit rides are Skull and GroundShock, each of which has its own strengths and weaknesses. But even if you’re on your lonesome, you can control one car and set up to three others as robotic AI opponents. If you’ve got enough friends and each has a mobile device, you can race head-to-head. Then all you need to do is download the app, charge the cars on the supplied charging plate, and get on with some racing.Ī maximum of four cars can be raced on the Overdrive track at one time. Putting the track together is made super-simple, as each end is loaded with magnets instead of fiddly fasteners. Additional track pieces, including jump sections, banked corners and crossings, are available separately. The starter kit comes with a couple of cars and 10 pieces of track – four straights, six right-angle curves and a pair of risers – and from this you can build eight layouts. Since we first reviewed Anki Overdrive back in 2015, it’s been through a lot of changes. It’s also about so much more than racing, with virtual weaponry for disabling your opponents and earning cash to upgrade your vehicle. In particular the greater torque should mean that they can climb steeper slopes and open the door to all manner of new circuits looping round the living room and garden. This is slot-racing for the modern generation, with app control and, well, no slots. Clever game modes share around the trucking fun, while new weapons and upgrades ensure longevity."Ĭertainly, seeing the trucks for the first time my kids' reaction was to dream up all manner of new tracks they wanted to build for them. The new trucks look great and create some super cat and mouse tactics as players battle to take on the big-rigs. " Anki Overdrive Supertrucks adds considerable value for racers of all ages. I spoke to Peter Jenkinson from Toyology about his thoughts on seeing the new additions. Anki states in its announcement that "these vehicles are designed to make gameplay more robust and set the stage for the ultimate true test of skill, pitting size and strength against speed and agility." So far this seems to be the case. Playing with X52 at the reveal event in London I was impressed at the balance between trucks and cars. There is a danger here that the trucks will over shadow the cars, both in terms of fun and ability. Add to this the "Air Ram" weapon that shoots cars off corners at top speed and X52 will be a popular competitor. Its stretched out cab and more angular design suggest a more offensive stance to racing. X52 feels more rugged of the two trucks.Freewheel has a "Gravity Trap" attack that disables opponents causing them to lose control. It still packs a punch in terms of weaponry. In green and silver and with a higher ride height on its trailer it feels the sleekest of the two. Freewheel has a European style blunt-nosed cab with the engined housed underneath. The first two trucks, for it seems that more must be planned, are Freewheel and X52. Rather than evading other players once you have captures the hill you chase after them in the truck to take them down - much more fun. A little bit like the King of the Hill mode already in the game, only here the roles are reversed. It's a simple addition to the game-play but works very well.
